Professional Biography

My academic background and working fields are political science and international relations, American foreign policy, international law, philosophy, theology, statistics, game theory, and economics.

Personal Biography

I grew up in the Silicon Valley while it was transitioning from orchards to high-tech factories. Most of my relatives were engineers, but I went a different direction, as children sometimes do.

Ten Adventures

Life & Purpose

My current project on the preeminent importance of women's equality delves into the purpose of life, the nature of love, and the failings of science, philosophy, and religion. This blog is for these reflections.

Notes on the World

This blog offers some thoughts on the intersection of international law and international politics in the context of current events. When I was teaching regularly, it tended to connect to issues being discussed in class.

Writing

My writing has primarily been on the relationship between domestic and international politics. I also work on international law, research methods and statistics, political philosophy, human rights, and ethics.

Current Work

I recently finished a book draft that returns me to my roots in philosophy and theology. The book is called The Idea. In it I make the argument that women's equality is the most important idea in all of human history.

Teaching

I have mostly taught at the graduate level, but have enjoyed a wide range of teaching opportunities, from large introductory undergraduate lectures to one-on-one doctoral supervisions and Oxford tutorials.

Students

I have had the privilege of working with a number of exceptionally talented and interesting students. My doctoral students and some others with whom I have worked closely are highlighted at the following link.
